Tunnel Digging Boy in Critical Condition Following Collapse

The 11-year-old and a friend were digging tunnels into the side of a riverbank when the tunnel collapsed on the victim, burying him and trapping him, sheriff's officials said.

An 11-year-old boy was in critical condition today following the collapse of a makeshift tunnel the youth was digging into a riverbank Saturday afternoon, officials said.

The accident occurred at Long Canyon Creek Park, 40356 N. General Kearny Road about 4:10 p.m., according to sheriff's officials.

Sheriff's deputies determined the boy and his friend had been digging tunnels into side of the dry riverbed when one of the tunnels collapsed on the victim, burying him from his head to his legs, officials said.

The other boy yelled for help and two adults ran to the site, where they dug the child out and called 911, a sergeant said.

The boy was taken by ambulance to Rancho Springs Medical Center, from where he was then flown to Children's Hospital, in San Diego, officials said.

Oh of course they were, like we all have when we were kids. If there is dirt and something to dig with there are all kinds of treasures to be found!! The fire department responded fast, worked fast on getting him out of there, and also had the sheriffs' coptor available to transport unless the ambulance got there. I am as always very proud of a job well done by our Fire Department and police. Praying for you constantly "LiL One" everyday and your family and friends as the Lord and Savior, or whoever you believe in, is holding you close to heal your owies.

This is so sad... These are my neighbors (the boys) and they are such good kids. My heart goes out to them and their families. I hope the hospitalized boy pulls through and the other boy does not feel responsible. This is so heart breaking.
