An 11-year-old boy was in critical condition today following the collapse of a makeshift tunnel the youth was digging into a riverbank Saturday afternoon, officials said.
The accident occurred at Long Canyon Creek Park, 40356 N. General Kearny Road about 4:10 p.m., according to sheriff's officials.
Sheriff's deputies determined the boy and his friend had been digging tunnels into side of the dry riverbed when one of the tunnels collapsed on the victim, burying him from his head to his legs, officials said.
The other boy yelled for help and two adults ran to the site, where they dug the child out and called 911, a sergeant said.
The boy was taken by ambulance to Rancho Springs Medical Center, from where he was then flown to Children's Hospital, in San Diego, officials said.
