Update: Benoit Supports Quarry

The project would be a benefit to Riverside County, he says.

Supervisor John Benoit stated his support for the proposed Liberty Quarry today.

The Board of Supervisors was expected to make a vote on the controversial project today at the County Administrative Center.

In closing statements, Supervisor Jeff Stone blasted the quarry, calling the facts presented by the company deceptive.

"I believe the applicants have provided the appropriate mitigation," Benoit countered.

He said doubts about the quarry were exaggerated and based on fear of the unknown.

"The unknown often turns out to be far worse than the reality," he said.

He recently visited locations near a large Granite-run quarry in Indio, and he never heard any complaints.

"I stood in their backyards, shopped in their shops, played golf on their (courses)," he said. "I've never heard a complaint about dust or air quality."

He pledged to support the project with his vote.
