Veterans Day—formerly Armistice Day—dates back to 1918, when Allied nations and Germany agreed to cease fire on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, November 11. The Treaty of Versailles wasn’t signed until the following June, officially ending the war, but Nov. 11 is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”
Along the way, the national holiday grew to become a day to honor veterans from all wars.
It also means a lot of people taking the day off from work. Here’s how the closures may impact you:
Government offices: The county says its offices will be closed. Most municipalities, such as Temecula, close for the day as well. Federal and state offices will be closed.
Emergency services: Law enforcement and firefighters will still be on duty and provide 24-hour service.
Postal: Post offices will be closed and there will be no delivery. Access to post office boxes will remain as usual.
Schools: The Temecula Valley Unified School District will observe the holiday.
Libraries: All of the Riverside County library branches will be closed for Veterans Day, including those in Temecula.
Garbage: Trash pick-up continues.
Transportation: Buses will adhere to their holiday schedules.
Banks: Major financial institutions, like Bank of America and Wells Fargo, will close all of their branches, but some smaller financial institutions and credit unions may open, some for limited hours.
Temecula Promenade Mall: The stores will remain open.
