Coach Leach’s Replacement Hired

Ryan Tukua will head varsity football at Chaparral High School.

Chaparral High School hired a replacement for fired coach Tommy Leach.

Ryan Tukua, a teacher who was with the school since 2005, will head varsity football.

He coached in several positions, including defensive coordinator during the school’s CIF championship season in 2009, according to the district’s spokesperson, Melanie Norton.

He was also the school’s strength and conditioning coach.

“We look forward to having coach Tukua continue to build our program into one of the top programs in the area,” Norton said in an e-mailed statement.

Tukua replaced Leach, who was fired in January, kicking off several days of protests and marches on the campus. The district never made the reason for his termination public.
