Murrieta Mesa's Outstanding Football Players of Week Recognized

The Rams are ready to move on after Friday night's loss and take on cross-town rival Murrieta Valley.

Mesa Murrieta Coach Justin Schaeffer announced the Outstanding
players from Friday’s 46 -20 home loss to Chaparral High School.

Junior defensive back Billy Montoya was named Defensive Player of the Game. Montoya had a strip of the ball—his second in two games—with a fumble recovery. He also added three unassisted tackles and an assisted tackle, all while not allowing his opposing receiver a single catch.

The Offensive Player of the Game was Senior Wide Receiver Khalil Sharpe. Sharpe broke his own school record for receptions in a game with 18 catches for 191 yards. He also scored a touchdown.

Sharpe is currently leading the CIF-Inland Division in receptions with 56.  He is ranked third in the CIF-Southern Section, which consists of more than 570 public and private high schools in most counties in southern and central California.

Junior Wide Receiver Daniel Castro was the Ram Special Teams player of the Game. As Mesa’s punter, Castro bombed one punt 55 yards, punted
one inside the 20-yard line and recovered a mishandled safety kickoff to help the Rams regain offensive possession of the football.

Quarterback Chase Chambers went to the hospital for observation after the Chaparral game. The MRI was negative and Chambers was released that evening. He is recuperating and getting ready for this week’s showdown with Murrieta Valley.

Murrieta Mesa’s overall football program is 13-5 for the season; varsity is 5-1, junior varsity is now 3-3 and the freshmen team is 5-1.

“We continue in our quest for our first varsity Southwestern League victory when we travel down the road to face Murrieta Valley for their Homecoming Game," Schaeffer said.
