Solar Cup: Temecula Team Wins 'Hottest-Looking Boat' Title

CORRECTION: The team from Temecula consisted of students from Chaparral, Great Oak and Rancho Vista high schools, not Temecula Valley High School as previously reported.

Boats from Savanna High School in Anaheim and Glendora High School in eastern L.A. County won the 11th annual Solar Cup boat races today near Temecula.

Savanna won the veterans division and Glendora won the rookie prize in the boat races, which pitted 39 teams from across Southern California including those from Temecula and Murrieta Mesa high schools.

Taking home the "Hottest-Looking Boat" prize among veteran teams was the group from Temecula, sponsored by Eastern Municipal and Rancho California water districts. The team was comprised of students from Chaparral, Great Oak and Rancho Vista high schools.

It was Savanna's third champion entry, and this year's boat was painted pink, to raise breast cancer awareness, as was a boat from Long Beach Poly High School.

The solar-power boats were built from identical kits featuring 16-foot hulls, solar panels and electric components. Teams apply skills in math, physics, engineering and communications to win.

The final heats today involved removing the solar panels and racing the boats on stored battery power alone, like dragsters.

The event is sponsored by the Metropolitan Water District, which supplies water from the Sacramento River delta and Colorado River to California cities from the Grapevine to San Ysidro. It was held at Lake Skinner, an MWD storage facility in western Riverside County.
