Temecula Teen to Hold Book Signing

Kylie Larkin, a River Springs Charter School student who suffers from Asperger's syndrome, will hold a book signing Saturday for "Midnight High."

Murrieta, CA – Kylie Larkin is proud to offer her current work, "Midnight High." xxx

"Midnight High" is a Manga (Japanese comic) character tale that is set in New Orleans, where Kylie lived until she was 4. Lavishly illustrated, it follows the adventures of a girl who, ironically, moves from California to New Orleans.

Kylie, 16, will hold a book signing from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 27 at River Springs Charter School, where she is a student. The book signing will take place during the school's Spring Faire at the Murrieta Student Center, 41682 Kalmia Street.

Kylie has Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism that typically impedes social interaction. Any limitations she may have, however, don’t extend to her creativity, which is evident in her art and writing.

The Temecula resident visits her grandfather, Hank Butler, who lives in New Orleans, during the summer.

“I’ve always loved that city,” Kylie said, “and wanted to use it as the setting.”

The idea for the book came about two years ago.

“I was bored one day, and I saw these characters in my head.”

Those characters are mythical students the girl meets in school.

Kylie’s mother, Erin Larkin, attributes her daughter’s progress to the Make a Difference (M.A.D.) Studio in Murrieta, where Kylie has been taking art lessons for more than a year.

“Christalyn Brooks (founder of M.A.D.) has saved Kylie by letting her draw her own way and working with her own ideas," Larkin said.

With a grant from the Inland Empire Autism Society, Brooks’ studio hosted art classes this past summer for autistic children.
