Temecula Third-Graders Get Special Gift From Elks: The Power Of Dictionaries

A total of 648 dictionaries have been handed out to Temecula third-graders, and the Elks plan to continue with the project to include at least five more elementary schools.

In order to help third-graders become good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners, Temecula Valley Elks Lodge #2801 is handing out hundreds of student dictionaries to the city's schoolchildren.

Lodge #2801 has again joined with The Dictionary Project, a national organization that works to get dictionaries in the hands of third-graders.

The student dictionaries are for use at school and home.

Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn, according to a news release from the Elks.

Lodge #2801 first joined The Dictionary Project in 2005. The local effort has gradually grown from one school the first year to six schools last year and, hopefully, 13 schools this current year.
