Want Your Kid to Ride the Bus? This School Year, You'll Pay More

Signups start July 24 for fee-based buses to and from 8 Temecula schools

If your kids ride a school bus in Temecula, you’ll need to sign up starting July 24. And you’ll need to pay.

This coming school year, parents will pay more. The district recently raised the cost of annual bus passes from $520 to $550 per student, making Temecula's fee-based school bus program one of the most expensive in the state.

Temecula Unified School District offers the fee-based program to students who live more than 1.25 (aerial) miles from their home elementary school, 2.5 miles from their home middle school, or 3.25 miles from their home high school. (View radius maps.)

But not everyone can get a bus ride.

According to the district, buses only are available for those attending Crowne Hill Elementary School, Tony Tobin Elementary School, Vail Elementary School, Bella Vista Middle School, Temecula Middle School, Vail Ranch Middle School, Great Oak High School, and Temecula Valley High School. (If a child at Alamos or Vintage elementary schools needs a bus ride to or from the Glen Oaks area, district officials say the child must attend Crowne Hill Elementary. Call 951.506.7984 for details.)

For a round-trip annual pass, the cost is $550 per child. The district offers other options, such as payments per month, rides just one way, or per semester.

When the school board hiked the fees in early June, Lori Ordway-Peck, the assistant superintendent of business services, said the increase was necessary because the state severely underfunds Temecula's transportation due to a technicality of the stipulations under which the district was incorporated. "It's a very unfair system," she said then.

Reduced rates also are available for those who qualify. Those who want to apply for reduced rates, however, should be prepared to share their 2011 federal income tax returns, according to the district.

Find out more about the fees here. Before signing up, make sure you have the forms you need. You can prepay online. But you cannot get a bus pass online.

District officials emphasize that every student must be present when signing up, because each school bus rider will receive a photo ID bus pass. Before anyone boards a bus, that person will need that bus pass, according to the district.

Here’s the signup schedule:
Signups will be at the TVUSD Transportation Office , 40516 Roripaugh Rd., Temecula, which is near Chaparral High School, according to the bus office.

It is so sad that our state has allowed this to happen. I remember a few years ago when the TVUSDRead More budget was horrible and teacher's were given less than $100.00 to budget their classrooms. Teachers are allowed to ask for donations but can no longer "require" students to bring in supplies for the classroom. PARENT'S need to step up to the plate!! After all these are OUR children and it's our responsibility to help them get the best education they can get. As long as people have the "entitlement" attitude with the public school system I can only see thing getting worse and not better. Please parents, help your teacher's. It does not take a fortune to pick up something extra for the classroom while buying your own child school supplies. Just my opinion!!

Skating Rink would be great for the kids and adults who grew up skating!

I second that thought. A roller rink would be great for the kids and "big kids", alike! IRead More recall the fun times going to the roller rink, bowling alley, parks and movies throughout Spring and Summer breaks. There was always the crystal ball spinning on the ceiling during skate contests while the DJ played, "Too Hot", from Cool and the Gang! LOL!!!

Nicholas: One thing ... not a nice thing ... which has not been commented upon very much is theRead More fact that this attack carried a "double sting." Not only was it directed against Americans (and their visitors for the Marathon) on "Patriot's Day" in Boston, but sundown on that terrible day marked the 65th Anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel ... at the very instant of which, in 1947, all of the surrounding Arab States simultaneously attacked. This was, if you will, "a double blow" ... and undoubtedly a "double 'Islalmic Terrorist' "Statement." Joseph B. Hudson, Jr., Esq., Fallbrook - (Member, American Society of International Law).

I never felt being Canadian that I would ever come close to losing my sisters to a terrorist attack.Read More Both of them flew to Boston from desperate parts of Canada. Mi youngest sister trained for 5 years qualifying to get in only to injure herself last year . So this was a big event this year for us . When I first heard there where bombs at the finish lines I spent 3 hours wrenched with fear , anger not being able to find out where my sisters where and if they are ok. About 4:00 pacific I heard from my mother that my lil sister crossed the finish line and was 4 blocks away looking for my other sister who was there to cheer her on . Thank God my sister was a fast runner at 3:24 she was out of the area but my other sister was not and saw the carnage just disgusting !... I am bringing here to Temecula for some Rest and happier vacation
