Save Gregory Canyon

An introduction to me and the Save Gregory Canyon blog. Stay tuned for more news.

Over the past several years, the Pala Band of Mission Indians has been working with several environmental organizations including the Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club and RiverWatch as well as concerned citizens to spearhead an initiative to preserve Gregory Canyon.

This blog will be your source of information related to the Gregory Canyon dump site, the proceedings at the state and local level, as well as information regarding events and public forums in addition to opinion pieces from myself, members of our coalition and individuals in the community.

Gregory Canyon, Ltd. (GCL) has been attempting to build a dump adjacent to sacred Indian sites and right on the banks of the San Luis Rey River. The Indian sites in this location are of great historical and cultural significance to all tribes in Southern California and we are committed to preventing the desecration of these sites.

Beyond that, the Gregory Canyon landfill project jeopardizes one of the last naturally flowing rivers in Southern California and will impact both surface and groundwater along the San Luis Rey River.

With its proximity to a major earthquake fault, there is a strong threat of seismic activity that could cause a catastrophic rupture in the landfill liner. The proposed dump also threatens to compromise two major San Diego County Water Authority pipelines nearby. The site is also home to several endangered and protected species including the rare North County Golden Eagle.

The fight against the dump in Gregory Canyon has stretched over two decades and it is important that the Patch community be aware of its progress – the more people learn about this proposed dump, the more they realize it needs to be stopped.
