Chaparral High Wins CIF 'Shake for Sportsmanship' Award

Each league selects one member school to win CIF Southern Section's "Shake for Sportsmanship" award, and Chaparral High School was this year's Southwestern League winner.

Temecula's Chaparral High School was selected as a winner of the 2012-2013 Kenneth Fagans "Shake for Sportsmanship" awards, the CIF Southern Section office announced Monday.

Chaparral, along with all of this year's winners, was honored Tuesday at Dodger Stadium prior to the Dodgers-San Diego Padres game.

Now in its 31st year, the award is named after the late Kenny Fagans, who served as Southern Section commissioner from 1954-1975.

Though there is no set criteria, the section offered the following guidelines to consider: "participation, enthusiasm, behavior at home and away games, treatment of opponents and treatment of the contest officials. Judging is to based not only on the student-athletes’ conduct, but also on the conduct of the school band members, drill teams, cheerleaders and student-rooting sections."

Calvary Murrieta Christian was the recipient of Ambassador League's "Shake for Sportsmanship" Award.

“We are very proud of this most important program,” said Rob Wigod, CIF-SS Commissioner of Athletics. “Schools receiving this award are to be commended for the direction provided by their administrative and coaching staffs, and especially for the positive action of their student body memberships. Shake for Sportsmanship goes hand-in-hand with our Victory with Honor and Character Counts programs and we are extremely proud to be a part of it.”
