High School Football Player's Serious Injury Prompts Questions

Has the sport become too dangerous?

A high school football player remained in critical condition Sunday after suffering injury to his spinal cord during a Nov. 22 game, The Press-Enterprise is reporting.

Jordan Walker, a junior at Corona’s Santiago High School, suffered neck and spinal cord trauma in the quarterfinal playoff game against Upland High School, the paper reported. Walker, a linebacker, was reportedly moving forward and attempting to make a tackle.

"After the play ended, Walker lie motionless on the ground," The Press-Enterprise reported.

Walker has been hospitalized at Loma Linda University Medical Center, according to the report.

While athletic injuries occur across all sports, football has taken much criticism of late, especially after former NFL players took on the league regarding player concussions.

Adding to the discussion, retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre now has reservations about his sport. And sports commentator Bob Costas has made it public how dangerous he thinks the sport has become. If he had a son, Costas said he would steer him away from playing football.

What are your thoughts? Would you, or do you, allow your kids to participate in the sport? Why or why not?
