Temecula HS Gridiron Summary For Week Ending Nov. 2

Temecula high schools played some great varsity football last week, finishing with a 4-1 record.

Great Oak Wolfpack highlights:

  • Junior quarterback Laquan Williams completed 13 of 20 passes and four touchdowns for 318 yards, including a league-leading 92-yard completion to junior Brandon Presley, late in the third quarter.
  • Presley caught six passes for an astonishing 232 yards and was on the receiving end of each of Williams’ TD passes.  He also caught a two-point conversion pass, just before halftime.
  • Junior running back Nick Fisher rushed 14 times for 149 yards and two touchdowns.  His longest carry was for 70 yards—a touchdown with under a minute left in the third quarter.
  • Junior linebacker Alejandro Gonzalez once again had the best night for the Wolfpack on defense with his ten tackles, seven as solo.
  • Three Great Oak teammates tallied eight tackles each: senior Arhon Chua, sophomore Demetric Felton, and Fisher.
  • Chua put the hurt on the Bears’ QB with four sacks and 36 yards in reverse.
  • Senior Sam Lopez also penetrated the TV offensive line for one sack.
  • Senior Luis Lopez pulled down one interception.
  • Presley had one kickoff return for 26 yards.
  • Senior kicker Keita Calhoun was good on 4 of 5 PATs.

Record:  2-2 League (5-4 Overall)

Next up:  The Wolfpack will finish up league play at home against Murrieta Mesa (0-4 league; 5-4 overall).  The Rams are intent on getting a league victory to go with their five non-league wins.

Temecula Valley Bear highlights:

  • Senior quarterback Kyle Plantier was 24 of 50 for 280 yards with two touchdown passes and one interception on the night.
  • Junior wide receiver Dominique Maiden had eight receptions for 115 yards and one touchdown catch.  He also converted a two-point PAT for the Bears’ final score.
  • Junior Griffin Doran had five catches for 70 yards.
  • Junior Darrin Hooks was the team’s leading rusher with 56 yards on eleven carries.
  • Freshman Zach Simon caught the Bears other touchdown pass.
  • Senior Connor O’Hara and Junior linebacker Manny Burgess each recorded eight tackles, six and three solo, respectively.
  • Seniors Malik Bell and Sol Mota and junior Jarod Iwasaki were credited with seven tackles for the game, six, six and two solo, respectively.
  • Bear senior punter Nathan Chupp had six punts, averaging 40.2 yards with his longest going for 58 yards.
  • Senior Bailey Gallagher did his best to get his offense good field position as he returned three kickoff returns a total of 53 yards.

Record:  1-3 League (3-6 Overall)

Next up:  The Bears conclude league play by hosting Murrieta Valley (1-3 league, 5-4 overall).  The Nighthawks are smarting after a 17-0 loss at home versus Chaparral and are fighting for a playoff spot.

The last time the Nighthawks were shut out was Sept. 1, 2006 at home versus Santiago (Corona), 35-0.

Chaparral Puma highlights:

  • Sophomore quarterback Austin Reza was good on 15 of 25 passes for 155 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
  • Senior wide receiver Franklin Shearer had five catches for 76 yards
  • Junior Davione Taylor had five receptions for 36 yards and one touchdown.
  • Junior running back William Riley was kept busy with 35 rushes for 191 yards.
  • Senior Alexander Pierce, junior Xavier Cardinal and junior Stephan Fitzgerald contributed six tackles a piece, three, four and two solo, respectively.
  • Senior Fawazz Lawal sacked the Nighthawk quarterback once near the line of scrimmage.
  • Senior Darren Aguon and junior Darrien Molton each had an interception.  Aguon ran his back for a score.

Record:  4-0 League (7-2 Overall)

Next up:  A league-championship showdown home game this Friday versus Vista Murrieta High School (4-0 league; 8-1 overall). The Broncos haven’t lost a league football game since Nov. 14, 2008 at Murrieta Valley (10-3). Chaparral won the CIF championship against the Broncos the following year on Dec. 11, 2009, 13-7, after getting trounced by Vista Murrieta 32-13 during league play.

Linfield Christian Lions highlights:

  • Senior quarterback Derek Rack threw seven completions on 12 attempts for 132 yards and three touchdowns.  His longest pass play went for 48 yards and a touchdown.  He sealed the deal with his final TD pass with under a minute to play.
  • Senior Alex Larson was on the receiving end of that TD play and had two other catches for a total of 65 yards.
  • Sophomore Greg Holt also had three receptions and two were in the end zone.
  • Holt also had sixteen touches on the ground for 76 yards and another touchdown.
  • Junior Wilkins ReyZeir had 20 carries for 59 yards.
  • Like many of his teammates, playing both sides of the ball, Holt made the most of it by leading the Lions with eight tackles, five solo.  He also had one quarterback sack for a five-yard loss, one interception for a 32-yard return and one fumble recovery for good measure.
  • ReyZeir was spot-on with seven solo tackles on the night.
  • Junior Cullen Baird had a fumble recovery of his own.
  • Sophomore kicker Michael Brown was 3 for 4 on his PATs.

Record:  3-1 League (5-4 Overall)

Next up:  The Lions should see a playoff game invitation come their way but must still take care of their last league foe, Aquinas, at home Friday night.  The Falcons are 1-3 in league (4-5 overall).

Rancho Christian Eagles highlights:

  • Junior quarterback Austin Fisher was a perfect 6 of 6 for 49 yards and one touchdown.
  • Fellow junior quarterback Preston Diehl was 9 of 11 for 130 yards and two touchdowns.  He also scampered for 27 yards on one rush.
  • Junior Jacob Diaz was on the receiving end of many of those passes garnering 11 for 125 yards and two TDs.
  • Sophomore Josh Fuller hauled in a nine-yard TD pass on his loan reception.
  • The Eagle’s leading rusher for the game was junior Reggie Ireland with nine carries for 110 yards and two touchdowns.  His longest run was for 20 yards.
  • The two top tacklers were junior Ben Chesser and Fuller who had six and five solo tackles, respectively.
  • Sophomore Edgar Taylor sacked the Brave’s quarterback once.
  • Chesser ran one kickoff return back 49 yards for his team.
  • Fuller ran one back for 20 yards.
  • Sophomore Evan Pruitt returned one punt for a spectacular 55 yards and a touchdown.
  • Diaz, acting as kicker, was perfect on 6 of 6 PAT attempts.

Record:  2-2 League (5-4 Overall)

Next up:  Coach Jimmy Kemmis’ Eagles finish out league play at Hamilton this Friday.  It could be a fight to the finish as the Bobcats are undefeated in league at 4-0 (4-5 overall).
