Temecula HS Gridiron Summary For Week Ending Nov. 9

Temecula high schools wrapped up varsity football league play last week, finishing with a 2-3 record.

Three Temecula teams move on to the CIF playoffs.

Great Oak Wolfpack highlights:

  • Junior quarterback Laquan Williams completed 8 of 14 passes and one passing touchdown; he also ran for a touchdown.
  • Junior Brandon Presley caught three passes for 35 yards and one touchdown.
  • Junior running back Nick Fisher had his second-most productive rushing night on the season with his 26 carries for 235 yards and three touchdowns.  His longest carry was for 61 yards—a touchdown early in the third quarter.
  • Junior linebacker Alejandro Gonzalez once again had the best night for the Wolfpack on defense with his nine tackles, five as solo.
  • Senior Arhon Chua had eight tackles, five solo.
  • Junior Kevin Knight had seven tackles, also five solo.
  • Sack distribution with a total of 31 lost yards:  Senior Ernesto Ruiz – 2.0; Knight – 1.5; Senior Matt Hobby – 1.0; Chua – 1.0.
  • Senior Raekwon Yates snagged one interception with a 20-yard return.
  • Punter Mateo Lopez had one of his best nights of the season with four punts averaging 44.75 yards, a long of 56, and a very helpful three inside the 20.
  • Junior kickoff returner Jonathan Hernandez had a season-best night with two returns for 65 yards—one for 49 yards.
  • Presley had three punt returns for 47 yards—one for 30 yards.

Season’s strengths:

  • Quarterback Laquan Williams – 115 of 188 for 1910 yards, 18 TDs, 9 interceptions
  • Running back Nick Fisher – 144 carries for 1226 yards, 17 TDs; multiple longest gains in various games included 70, 70, 69, 61, & 43 yards
  • Defensive sacks – 27

Record:  2-2 League (5-4 Overall)

Next up:  CIF action opens up for coach Robbie Robinson’s Wolfpack team on the road this Friday.  The normally tough Norco Cougars are not invincible with their 7-3 overall record.  They finished runner-up to Centennial of the Big VIII League with their 4-1 record and will attempt to thwart Great Oak’s goal of going deep towards a championship crown.

Temecula Valley Bear highlights:

  • Senior quarterback Kyle Plantier was 26 of 54 for 373 yards with four touchdown passes and two interceptions on the night.  His longest play was for a 42-yard TD.
  • Senior Klarence Collins was on the other end of that 42-yard TD late in the first quarter.  He had seven catches for 119 yards and two touchdowns, his best game of the year.
  • Junior wide receiver Dominique Maiden had nine receptions for 108 yards and one touchdown catch.  He also caught two conversion passes.
  • Senior Greg Jensen had five receptions for 67 yards and one TD.
  • Manny Burgess was the defensive player of the game for the Bears with his fine 19 tackles—13 solo.
  • Senior Bailey Gallagher had eight solo tackles.
  • Junior Darrin Hooks intercepted one pass for a 23-yard return.
  • Bear senior punter Nathan Chupp had three punts, averaging a lofty 48.33 yards with his longest going for 61 yards.
  • Gallagher returned four kickoffs for a total of 69 yards—the longest was for 26 yards.

Record:  1-4 League (3-7 Overall)

Chaparral Puma highlights:

  • Sophomore quarterback Austin Reza finished league play with 12 of 29 passes, 102 yards passing and three interceptions.
  • Seniors Franklin Shearer and Carey Harrison each had 40 yards receiving with four and five receptions, respectively.
  • Senior Alexander Pierce and junior Xavier Cardinal each had ten tackles with six solo tackles each.  Pierce also had a fumble recovery.
  • Senior Fawazz Lawal also had six solo tackles.
  • Junior Malik Lawal and senior Dalton Knight each had a sack of the Bronco QB.
  • Senior Darren Aguon had one interception.
  • Junior Darrien Molton was credited with a safety mid-way through the first quarter.
  • Senior Jon Baron was 1 of 2 for field goals; his 39-yarder was early in the second half.

Season’s strengths:

  • Running back William Riley has 743 rushing yards on 140 carries and seven TDs
  • Wide receiver Franklin Shearer is averaging nearly 20 yards per catch, totalling 751 yards and five TDs
  • Linebacker Alexander Pierce is averaging 8.2 tackles per game
  • Defensive lineman Malik Lawal has 7.5 sacks on the year
  • Defensive back Darrien Molton leads his team with five interceptions
  • Kicker Jon Baron is perfect in the PAT column with 36 thus far; his longest field goal was 51 yards against Carter

Record:  4-1 League (7-3 Overall)

Next up:  Coach Ryan Tukua’s team hosts Chino Hills in the first-round of the CIF playoffs this Friday.  The Huskies finished fourth in the Sierra League with a 3-2 record (7-3 overall) and will have their hands full against the Pumas who finished second in the Southwestern League.

Linfield Christian Lions highlights:

  • Senior quarterback Derek Rack was 5 of 8 attempts for 180 yards and two touchdowns.  His longest pass play went for 77 yards and a touchdown.
  • That TD was sophomore Greg Holt’s only catch, but, again, for 77 yards!  (Nice average!)
  • Senior Alex Larson had only two receptions, but one was for 70 yards and a touchdown.  His second catch was for seven yards.
  • Junior Jacob Miller had three carries, one for a touchdown.
  • Holt had six rushes for 73 yards, including a break-away for 43 yards.
  • Junior ReyZeir Wilkins had 15 carries for 66 yards.
  • Holt was also busy on the defensive side of the ball with his team-leading 12 tackles, eight solo; he had one sack.
  • Senior Dallas House aided with eight tackles, seven solo; he had 1.5 sacks.
  • Junior Jared Collom had one sack and sophomore Brandon Leach was credited with a half of a sack.
  • On one exciting play, Larson recovered a fumble and took it 45 yards for a score.
  • Wilkins had a huge kickoff return of 98 yards and a score in the second quarter.
  • Larson ran back two kickoffs for 57 yards.
  • Sophomore kicker Michael Brown was 5 for 5 on his PATs.

Season’s strengths:

  • Quarterback Derek Rack has racked up 1131 passing yards and ten TDs
  • Primary receiver Alex Larson is averaging nearly 20 yards per catch
  • Lead rusher, ReyZeir Wilkins has seven TDs to go with his 662 yards on the ground
  • Linebacker Caden Wakefield leads the defensive stats averaging 8.2 tackles per game
  • Dallas House and Greg Holt each have five sacks
  • Field goal kicker Michael Brown has one three-pointer for 53 yards

Record:  4-1 League (6-4 Overall)

Next up:  Coach DeChon Burns’ Lions will play host to the Fighting Scots of Rim of the World High School in Round One of CIF Friday night.  Their foe was 3-2 in the Mountain Valley League (7-3 overall), finishing third.
