Restoring/Repainting "The Embrace" by Gustav Klimt

You are probably very familiar with "The Kiss" by Gustav Klimt. But "The Embrace" is another one of his paintings created during his Golden Phase.

I have a client who had purchased a large giclee of The Embrace many years ago and it had faded. She had spent a good deal on having it mounted and framed and loved the location in her home where it hung. Unfortunately over time the colors in the giclee faded and the gorgeous colors originally created in the painting were lost.

My client asked me if it was possible to restore the colors in this painting. "Of course," I quickly replied. As I examined it closely and touched the substrate on which the giclee had been transferred... I felt confident I could paint over top of the original.

After researching The Embrace I found it difficult to find a high resolution copy of the piece that I could use for good reference. Many "copies" from other artists' attempts at duplicating The Embrace were readily accessible but didn't provide much it accurate original detail.  So during the repainting I had to switch back and forth between many samples on my computer screen. I zoomed in and out and tediously painted over the giclee. It was like a paint by number project but I had to mix my own colors instead of having colors premixed and packaged for me.

I think it came out great and the client was pleased! What do you think?
