Walk Aims to Prevent Suicides

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention plans the event for Sunday at Ronald Reagan Sports Park.

A 2.5-mile walk is planned to raise funds for a nonprofit dedicated to preventing suicide.

The "Out of the Darkness" walk, which is the first in what organizers hope will be an annual event, is hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, according to Jessica van deer Stad, a spokesperson for the event.

"The event will include powerful speakers, a Community Memory Tree to honor the local lives lost to suicide, a Stomp Out Suicide demonstration to prompt conversation about mental health issues, and a 2.5-mile walk around the park," van deer Stad said in an emailed announcement.

More than 36,000 people in the U.S. kill themselves annually, with close to 1 million attempting, van deer Stad said, and 90 percent have a diagnosable mental health disorder, she said.
