Yes, Kathy, there is a reason: Democrats run everything in this state and they want to brainwashRead More children and have been for some time now.
Kathy Smith May 13, 2013 at 06:19 pm
Is there a reason we can't look at teaching from California's past when we had outstanding schoolsRead More and resume teaching in like manner?
TVOR May 13, 2013 at 06:08 pm
Too bad the whole voucher thig is not working out so well. Private school is better.
gordon May 9, 2013 at 11:01 pm
shannan, if you recall, the anti-prop 30 people warned that it was a scam to throw money into theRead More general fund to be used for whatever the liberals wanted and whoever they wanted to buy votes from. and the majority of the voters ignored this warning. arcie, below is right. we need to send the current ruling class home and let the other side run the legislature for a while, just to see if they can straighten things out (and i don't mean another rino governor like mr schwartzcheater).

The Entitlements are coming to a halt, Finally. As a taxpayer working in the private sector I amRead More tired of paying these ridiculous retirement and benefit amounts for the Entitlement workers that work for the cities , counties, state, and federal governments. Lay the fools off and get rid of the dead weight. Amen!!
Arcie May 9, 2013 at 06:38 pm
Shannan - It's just more of the same "bait-and-switch". Our government continues to foolRead More us into believing if we just give a little more, they can make things right. Then they get our hard earned money and spend as they wish, with little accountability and even less concern to the taxpayers. Sadly, many voters vote based on social issues leaving fiscal issues to fall by the wayside. It is beyond time to give all of our incumbent representatives their own pink slip (Can it really get any worse?)! Maybe then they will realize we are done with their ineffectiveness. VOTE THEM OUT, VOTE THEM OUT, VOTE THEM OUT!!!

How do you become educator of the year without teaching a single class of students??
max May 9, 2013 at 02:53 pm
I think this guy should get an extra special award for Morally Questionable Educator Of the Year.Read More Or maybe a unique plaque describing Ritter's lack of ethics. What I'd like to know is what kind of kickbacks is he getting for this weird abuse of his students? There has to be some kind of benefit for him because as far as a PR item the news of Mr. Ritter arm-twisting special needs students against their parents' wishes and hassling them with trumped-up drug charges is decidedly a negative, so somewhere there has to be a positive. I wonder how much money it is?
Edwin Steel May 9, 2013 at 02:04 pm
This is the same bozo that allows a special needs student to be caught up in a drug sting andRead More another special needs student to be used against his parent's wishes to bait a school drug sale? This is 'educator' of the year? Sounds as though his education is sorely lacking!

Sadly, the teacher I nominated didn't win. But, I love Mrs. Wells from GOHS, so I'm glad she won.
MyThoughts April 28, 2013 at 01:53 pm
I went with a large group of people to this event yesterday. We had fun hanging out with ourRead More friends. The food & drinks were great, but is was expensive and the music was horrible! Events like that need more upbeat & fun music, not something that will put you to sleep or make you feel bored! Not sure that we will return next year but if we do decide to give it another chance, I hope the music will be much better.

Michele, no need to get mad over that. Suffering doesn't necessarily mean like its a bad thing. ItRead More can just mean struggles. She struggles with Asperger's syndrome. It's like the same thing. It's true they do struggle/suffer at times. I have aspergers and it is struggling sometimes and sometimes I'm suffering. It's hard to have it and in a way you can suffer from it. I'm glad I have it because I view the world differently and I think different from others and people don't know how I feel, so I feel special. So sometimes it is suffering.
3 thing remain April 26, 2013 at 06:35 pm
You've made a good point and it has been duly noted. Now is the time in our understanding of ASRead More that we choose enriching words to describe AS minds in the same way that those minds enrich our world. No one can argue that AS brings with it a downside to be managed but by the same token, it brings a tremendous upside and creativity to be celebrated - a blessing. Kylie illustrates that beautifully. She is blessed.
Michele Clark Powell April 26, 2013 at 02:52 pm
"...who suffers from Asperger's syndrome." This always drives me mad; suffer from. My sonRead More does not suffer from AS. The people that don't understand or appreciate his differences are the only suffering that comes from AS. Those that do appreciate his differences enrich him because the only real difference is in how and when people with AS do things. Of course we all do things at a different pace when we don't let society or peer pressure make our choices for us, so AS people are basically well-balanced normal people who don't bother to let society dictate who they are or will become. <3 And I applaud this young woman and her family for the example they are making!

it wasn't just the special education students or english learners, it was over half of the school.Read More Do you think schools in Temecula track kids?

Ben Thinkin, I wish I could talk to the parents because I think it happened in my child's elementaryRead More school too.
Necol Keenan April 9, 2013 at 08:47 pm
I think this is good news, however the rate could be higher if they decreased class sizes. TheRead More classrooms are way too overcrowded.

Finally, a step toward REAL education.... this has been going on for many years in Europe and otherRead More parts of the world.... Welcome to the 21st century!! Now what is needed is more parental involvement to help fund the project.
Joy April 5, 2013 at 03:52 pm
For what it's worth, the article does say it's for kids in 7th-10th grades. Though I agree, IRead More changed my mind so many times about what I wanted to do with my life, and didn't land on a career field until I was a senior in high school -- many people change their minds well into college. (And I still don't even work in my degree field!)
Laura Stansfield April 5, 2013 at 12:06 pm
Don't you all realize that this is grant funding from Kaiser Permanente? Sarcasm.....why not spendRead More $3M on this when you are able to NOT provide proper care or treatment to your existing cancer patients or patients with other needs without a fight? And, no worries on who they provide program to because aren't almost ALL youth of today socioeconomically challenged? I know my own kids are and they don't even know it! To Kaiser Permanante: use the $3M to provide free and/or proper medical care/treatment to the socioeconomically disadvantaged population, not for pie in the sky unsustainable youth programs that will be cut due to budget constraints in the next year! And don't even let Jerry Brown tell us to vote to raise our taxes or he'll cut this educational program too.....come on, laugh with me people!

It's not a far reach "SA" a disabled student was baited into providing pot to anRead More undercover cop. The student did not have pot to begin with. Autistic and special needs kids are incredibly vulnerable and are easily manipulated. The school district failed to protect him from temecula pd's predatory practices. This was no mistake "Only my thought", the student was targeted by an undercover officer and pressured into getting marijuana to gain his friendship. He has autism not adhd "Jill", people with autism typically never reach an age where it just magically goes away. Had he not been coerced by the police on school grounds he would not have committed a crime. If the "sting" operation targeted a specific group of people, in this case special ed students then yes the school did indeed discriminate against the student "TVOR".
TVOR May 3, 2013 at 04:57 pm
The notion that the school district is discriminating against special needs students is ludicrous.Read More These people just want to take it out on the school district that their kid got caught. Shame on them.
jill May 2, 2013 at 06:47 pm
At what point, and at what age, will they be responsible for their actions? I would guess that jailsRead More are filled with individuals with ADHD. If impulse control was their problem when they committed crimes, should we not hold them responsible?
christina machado-wilson April 24, 2013 at 01:05 pm
The development of Common Core State Standards started in 2009. They're not bad. They're not veryRead More different from the previous academic standards. For example, one of the new standards for 1st graders is: Describe the characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details. 2nd graders: Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges. Please read them before judging. Potential problems lie with how the standards will be taught at the classroom level. It's important for the community to get involved in the instructional materials selection process so kids don't get wikipedia articles instead of textbooks.

Imagine if the auto makers were told by Washington that next year they needed to be 100% metric withRead More 0% defects. But, none of the tools will be marked, there is no training manual, there is no time to retool plants and if too many cars are returned defective, the offending plants will be shut down. But, says Arne Duncan, head of the US Department of Education, if you want testing relief, AND money to pay for the computers for testing AND money for training, AND money for curricula – all you have to do is sign up for Race to the Top waivers, tie funding to test scores, and, if kids fail the tests (when) relinquish governance to for-profit national charter school companies. The long and the short of it is that in and if itself, CCSS’s has merit. But the muddling of Washington has left teachers treading water that has risen up to somewhere between upper lip and nose. There is no plan for success and the ones that will be hurt the most will be the kids who will be forced to be schooled in a climate where the shortsightedness of adults seeking a rapid political expedient to a perceived problem has left them in an intellectual cyclone of indecisiveness and abysmal National leadership.

As a degreed mechanical engineer, holder of a Masters in Elementary Math Education, 10 year veteranRead More of the classroom, teacher panelist on the CDE Common Core Math Framework Adoption committee, member of the CDE State review board for Common Core Supplemental Materials in math, I believe I am qualified to comment on this topic. The Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (CCSSM) is internationally benchmarked, written by math AND education experts and developed based on years of research driven evidence derived from data geared specifically to align with the cognitively appropriate mathematical pathways of children. It is a good program that looks, feels, and expects good math skills and reasoning capabilities from students at every age group. The CCSSM is RADICALLY different from the heavily procedural superficial national textbook curriculum that emerged as a result of the 1997 No Child Left Behind act. Than being said, the implementation of the CCSS’s is nothing less than a political Gordian knot and boondoggle of epic proportions. As the article references, the DRAFT of the math frameworks was just released this week. To date there are NO textbooks, No training, No “tooling” or transition time, and No money even if these goods and services were available. What IS in place, however, is a complex computer based testing regimen that will be given to all students next year.

LOL, hey thats ok TTG. Its very true that Asian children are learning or being taught seriouslyRead More fromthe time they are born. I think they come out of the va ja ja speaking 5 languages. My sister in law is Asian, but was born in Sweden after her family managed to get free and cross over until they got there, with her mother pregnant. So being born there was different, but she is technically Swedish. This woman can speak 5 languages fluently and excelled in college in Sweden and then here at the University in half the time it would take other students. Then went on to a wonderful job immediately out of college. In her graduating class and at the top were a large amount of Asians and its all because they do take it seriously from birth and most know what they are going to do or become. Ie like a gymnist and then all efforts 24/7 are put into that. Obviously there is not alot of play room if you live in Japan running into each other, so what can you do but find a small place to sit and read. :)
That Temecula Guy April 12, 2013 at 07:27 pm
No, I didn't mean to come across that way... I would seriously like to read a book about how theseRead More families are raising their children to excel in education. They really are amazing, and I would love to know the technique. I'm willing to bet it has a lot to do with a supportive family with high expectations, but there must be more. Seriously, I give major respect to the parents of these kids. I want the book!

I do not profess to be an expert on autism TemecuMom. Other then having friends with children orRead More adults who are autistic in different degrees as I said above. I also said they all function on different levels and some definately know wrong from right and others do NOT. I know ones that light the oven fire, chase their sisters with a knife, and ones who only show autism signs in little spurts. All in differnt types of schools. But the ones in regular schools know the difference between right and wrong, as most of them do, and especially about drugs like all our kids are taught. Hunting down 22 people selling drugs is going from point 1 to point 22, one leads to another, and one giving info on the next one. If the end result is to get drugs out of our school so no one can get them including the autistic young man then the entire operation was successful. If anything else it was probably also an eye opener to alot of parents that their children were involved in this at all. I have also never heard this blind compliance teaching, but I will certainly look into that if its something I am a decade behind in. But I dont think a parent would tell their child to buy pot for someone else, or to smoke pot with someone else if they are asked to do so. Thank you for your feedback Temecumom and I certainly wont use demeaning or insulting remarks about age or otherwise to address you in return. :) Its just a comments area.
TemecuMom March 22, 2013 at 11:51 pm
Oh Brenda, once again you are spouting off as though you are some type of expert when you are not.Read More How do you know that the police "did the right procedures"? Shouldn't they have gone after established dealers in their bust rather than coercing a student with multiple disabilities into becoming a 'dealer'? And yes, the vast majority of students with autism "function in a regular high school". Perhaps you should join us in the current decade and study up on I.D.E.A. Sheesh.

I was at a school board meeting where they gave raises to administrators and more for the schoolRead More board members for expenses 6.8% to be exact. I don't recall the increase amount for the administrators.
Brenda March 7, 2013 at 10:45 pm
Temecula Restaurant, Great posts, factual and true. JJ spot on as always. I have to say in allRead More the years of putting our kids through all grades of school I have NEVER seen so many, 1350 currently, people at schools that do NOTHING. OR ones having personal conversations while phones ring off the hook. While 5 or 6 will be in there working their butts off. I have seen the occassional good buddy fixes and coverups of "cover me for 45 min while I run and pick up Joseph Ann and take her to her babysitter, then you can take lunch, and then I will take mine"! This one I will always remember because I questioned them about it, LOL. Not one to stand back and see this going on with a line of 5 or 6 of this I had to!! I think each schools supporting staff should be cut at least 33%, along with administrators FIRST who make way too much for a office job. Cut back on all teachers who sole purpose is to teach English and give them a regular class room to cut back on the students per class. Anyone who does not know English can pay for special teachers, aids. This will pay the bills and provide more teachers per student which is a change we need badly for the sake of our children.

Well maybe it's time Ritter get booted out of his job and all the "good ole boys" thatRead More give their friends jobs before those who have sub or worked for free get the jobs. I also think it's time that the public who is paying more on taxes start demanding answers. Ritter stated that the district is re-evaluating it's Curriculum to make our kids education more advanced in technology. Yes, they gave teacher's their furlough days back...added on to the school year.... screwed up family vacation times only to make our kids suffer even more. I just don't get it. I am really mad at the irresponsible actions of this "friendly" made administration and board. For those who don't know if everyone knows this but the teacher's union bargins the furlough days to be given back to the teachers even before furloughs are agreed upon. No matter the outcome... the kids are getting less and less and HIGH PAYING Ritter, administrators and their friends are sitting back while deserving people are getting laid off.

Congratulations to all of you from both high schools. You do our your parents, your schools and ourRead More City proud. If any of you go into legal work best of luck.
