Dayle William Long, 42, a former sheriff's deputy, allegedly killed French Valley resident Sam Vanettes, 36, during an argument at Spelly's Pub & Grille in December. The hundreds who turned out Sunday to celebrate the life of Sam Vanettes were a testament to how much he was loved. Three weeks after Vanettes, 36, a French Valley resident and a Temecula Valley High School grad, was shot and killed Dec. 21 in a Murrieta bar—allegedly by off-duty Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy Dayle Long—his family threw a party in his honor. A former Riverside County Sheriff's deputy pleads not guilty to shooting a man to death during a bar fight on Murrieta Hot Springs Road.
A former deputy accused of shooting a man to death in a bar pleaded not guilty today. Dayle William Long, 42, appeared before a judge at the Southwest Justice Center in a red jail uniform with his ankles shackled and his hands chained to his waist with his attorney today to make his plea. Spelly's Pub & Grille will host a benefit for the families of two recent Murrieta homicide victims. The city of Murrieta, the Murrieta Police Department and several area businesses are coming together to sponsor the "We Are Murrieta" event to remember Saskia Burke and Sam Vanettes. Murrieta police responded shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday to a shooting call at Spelly’s Bar and Grille on Murrieta Hot Springs Road. Winchester resident Samuel Vanettes, 36, was found suffering with multiple gunshot wounds and died on the scene, the sheriff's coroner reported. The killing was the second to rock the city in the last two days.
